Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) is co-hosting the Regional Contingency Plan Development and Implementation Coordination for Africa and Indian Ocean (AFI) Region workshop, attended by delegates from various African states, at its Aviation Training Academy near OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg.
This is the second year in a row that ATNS has partnered with the International Airline Transport Association (IATA) on behalf of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), to host this very important event.
The main objectives of this workshop are to provide support for States, Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), IATA, Airspace Users and international organizations to complete the development of their contingency plans; update their contingency plans in respect of new development; coordinate and align their contingency routes systems with AFI regional Contingency routes to facilitate functionality of their contingency plans, and promulgate contingency plans for implementation in the event of disruption, or potential disruption of air traffic services and related supporting services.
In line with the provisions of Standard 2.31 of Annex 11 to the Convention on International Civil Aviation – Air Traffic Services and Conclusion 17/66 of the Seventeenth Meeting of the AFI Planning and Implementation Regional Group (APIRG/17) in August 2010, States are required to develop and promulgate contingency plans for implementation in the event of disruption, or potential disruption, of air traffic services and related supporting services in the airspace for which they are responsible for the provision of such services in close coordination with ICAO and Air traffic services authorities responsible for the provision of services in adjacent portions of airspace.
The workshop will also initiate the establishment of a regional Contingency Coordination Team (CCT), whose function shall be to coordinate continuity in the flow of international air traffic at regional level, in the event of full or partial unavailability of any portion of airspace affecting traffic flow
ATNS continues to participate in the AFI region’s initiatives to enhance the region’s performance and readiness to deal with unplanned situations and to promote safety, efficiency and capacity within the region. The workshop ends on Friday, 24 May 2019.
