The Immigration Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs of The United Republic of Tanzania has officially removed the citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from “the Referred Visa Category following published amendments in the Government Gazette number 246 of 2026.”
According to the Chief Spokesperson of Tanzania Immigration Services Department, ACI. Paul J. Mselle, “With immediate effect, Nigerian nationals traveling to the United Republic of Tanzania are no longer subject to referred visa restrictions and will follow standard visa application procedures through the official immigration online portal or designated entry points.”
The Referred Visa Category is a visa requirement for nationals of specific countries who require special clearance from the immigration authorities before entering a country
This is a step further to the elimination of visa requirements and aligns with the African Union’s “Agenda 2063 flagship project: The African Passport and Free Movement of People” which “aims to remove restrictions on Africans ability to travel, work and live within their own continent. The initiative aims at transforming Africa’s laws, which remain generally restrictive on movement of people despite political commitments to bring down borders with the view to promoting the issuance of visas by Member States to enhance free movement of all African citizens in all African countries.”
