The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has received a certificate of recognition from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for its Aviation Security Training Center (ATSC).

This aligns with ICAO’s mandate as a specialized agency of the United Nations to ensuring that Member States apply Civil Aviation Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) in a harmonized manner to facilitate continuous growth in aviation.

Mr. Mam Sait Jallow, ICAO Regional Director for Africa, who represented the President of the Council, Dr. Bernard Aliu, at the ceremony says: “With the recognition of the ASTC of Nigeria, the network of aviation security training centres comes to 35 widely distributes in all ICAO regions, to provide aviation security training at the international, regional and national levels, to all categories of personnel involved or responsible for the implementation of security measures, policies and procedures, in accordance with its strategic objectives to improve the level of implementation of ANNEX 17 Standards.”

Mr. Jallow also notes that the certificate of recognition issued by ICAO to the ASTC of Nigeria means that the centre has been duly certified and meets the necessary criteria in this regard. He, however, adds that to continue to meet such requirements during the period of validity of the certificate of recognition, stakeholders are required to double their efforts through the implementation of a coherent and comprehensive monitoring program.

The Director General, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Usman Muhtar, expresses his gratitude to ICAO and also notes that the country is ready to commence training.

He says: “I am very grateful to ICAO for the endorsement of this school after a successful evaluation process which proves that FAAN Aviation School is ready to contribute to the ICAO global aviation security training programme. I wish to inform ICAO that presently in Nigeria, there are five certified ICAO AVSEC Instructors and over sixty qualified National AVSEC Instructors that can be of service at the ASTC.”

Notably, Engr. Saleh Dunomah, the Managing Director of FAAN, and Mr. Kieran Woods, Aviation Security Liaison Officer, Department of Transport, British High Commission, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Aviation Security and Training.
